To Market, To Market was aimed to capture real voices and real experiences about one of Leeds’ most beloved spaces: Kirkgate Market.
Alongside Afshan 3 other writers-in-residence went out among the stalls and shoppers to collect stories for our interactive storytelling map. They delved into the history of the market, plundering a wealth of oral testimonies and archive material to develop a promenade performance exploring the project’s theme of movements human, economic and emotional. To Market, To Market was produced by DLS Enterprises and commissioned by imove for Yorkshire’s Cultural Olympiad. The project was supported through public funding by The Legacy Trust UK and Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts scheme.
The writers were selected from Young Inscribe, a writer development programme housed and supported by Peepal Tree Press.
Afshan played the role of a woman who sold shoes by day and was a dominatrix by night. She educated the audience and told them stories that played a key role in the overall performance.
